Chef'n Slicester Cheese Slicer, Apricot Review

I like this slicer for several reasons.It is easy to use, safe and creates slices that are even all the way to the bottom.The handle is a comfortable size and shape to grip and feels secure in your hand.The unit will accommodate a cheese block as wide as 3 1/4". The roller is adjustable allowing for three different slice thicknesses, from an 1/8" to 1/4".I found the adjuster a bit hard to turn so I've selected the size I like most and just leave it there most of the time.

There's a spring action built into the cutter that isn't evident when looking at it, but allows the blade to descend all the way to your cutting surface giving an even slice from top to bottom.I've only used the cutter on cheddar and block cheeses of similar firmness so can't speak to its performance on other types, but am very pleased with the slices on those I've tried.The blade is not sharp so might not be good on hard cheeses.The holes in the blade are good for letting each slice fall away rather than sticking to the cutter as happens with some types.

I don't like the spatula/plane type slicers with the slot in them because the slices are too thin to suit me and I can never get them even. I've tried the T shaped slicers with the wire, but get annoyed that I can't get all the way to the bottom of the block so after several slices I have a sort of tongue of cheese left at the base of the block.The cheese cutting boards with the wired lever can work until the wire breaks, but since I'm left handed, they aren't ideal for me.

I'm always trying the latest gadget for cheese slicing and have finally found one I really like. If, like me, you haven't been satisfied with traditional slicers, you may find this is the answer.It sure does a great and consistent job for me.

Oxo Good Grips Mandoline Slicer Review

I've had this mandoline about 4 months after reading the recommendation of a Washington Post writer.It has worked well enough, but I sometimes wonder if the Boerner V-slicer would have been a better purchase.The blade is *not* that sharp, although it does a good enough job on potatoes, my main use for it.It is easy to clean and the blades are all right there when you need them, but I have one big gripe.The holder/pusher seems to "grasp" a lot of whatever you are cutting, leaving huge chunks of leftover potato, cucumber, carrot or whatever.My objective is not to throw away 15-20% of my vegetables.
Addition to review:returned said mandoline and replaced with Boerner V-slicer.No comparison!The V-slicer is sharper, easy to use, and doesn't waste large chunks of vegetable.It Sliced cukes and tomatoes with ease!

Cherry Bread Slicer Review

I've recently started making our own bread. We quickly realized the children were having trouble slicing a straight line and quickly the loaf was all out of shape. I looked over the bread slicers that have a plastic guide to help you cut several slices at once and not a one of them was given a favorable review. That was enough for me to look for something else. That's when I found this wonderful item.It is nicely crafted and sturdy. It assembles with one small screw. My son is left handed so the slicing guide on both ends is very convenient. The main feature of this that sold me is that you can cut each slice to the size you want each and every time. I didn't give five stars for two reasons, 1) the guides are fairly close to the end and I can see how they could be broken if you accidently press too hard against it. 2) If you use the slicer a lot, it develops a groove in the base from the knife going through the bread.

My experience is markedly different than the other reviewers of this product.I have several different types of cheese cutters in my kitchen gadget drawer and find myself reaching for this more often than the others.I like the ability to change the thickness of the slices of cheese by rotating the handle in your palm to be an advantage.I also note that there is an adjustment for the cutting wire tension so that you can keep it tight over time.I will admit that my initial uses of the slicer were clumsy, but when used often this is a really cool tool.Perhaps it's not for everyone, but it's a keeper for me!

I have had the apple peeler style with the red handle for about 12 years, and when the prongs that hold the apples started to break off, I finally had an excuse to get rid of it. It had the following problems. 1: The metal screw that twisted to push the apple got black stuff all over your hands when you touched it, which was neccessary to get the apples on and off the prongs. Not something desirable when working with food. 2: To core the apples, they had to be sliced very thinly, not optimal for pies, for example. 3: It didn't work well on small or irregularly shaped apples. This clear plastic apple peeler allows you to peel the apples, then slice them however you want. It peels apples faster than the other, and it comes with a corer that doesn't require slicing, and a corer/slicer that cuts the apples into eigths. Both work well. All the tools were effective even for odd shaped apples. I'm thrilled with it! The only small flaw was that water got inside when I washed it. This was pretty easy to get around. There are a couple of screws that allow the device to be disassembled and reassembled quickly and easily. Even if the plastic or the razor don't hold up well over time, I'll happily buy 10 of these before I ever buy another of the other kind.

Kanekichi Turning Slicer Benriner Review

I had some zucchini angel hair with pesto at a potluck and was so amazed by it, I have been seeking the right tool for the job ever since.The little Joyce Chen gadget many seem to rave about gets such mixed reviews, I was afraid to try it.When I came upon the Benriner, I was sure I knew which brand I wanted - but was not sure whether I should go with the cook help (upright) model or the horizontal model.

I couldn't really find anything comparing the two.Best I could tell, they were the same, but one you pushed down on, and the other you pushed sideways one.The most compelling reasons to go with the upright model seemed to be cost and it seems like it should be easier to push down, than sideways.The most compelling reason to go with the horizontal model were the pile could grow bigger as you worked and you wouldn't have to move the unit, you could use bigger chunks of vegetables, and it seemed you could do a cabbage.I could not find a picture of cabbage being done on the upright one.For some reason I really want to do a cabbage on this thing so I got very hung up on that idea.

I'll spare you the details of HOW I ended up with 2 of them...but I did.The Cook Help we were going to return but ended up giving it to my mother in law and in the interest of science we tested both units.So now I can write what may be the lone review comparing the two units. (She was here while we did this, it wasn't a case of we used it and then said "Hey, here's a present for ya!"- just so I don't sound rude or anything here, LOL)

I did some zucchini on mine, with the medium blade.It worked GREAT.Yes, it does feel like the Play Doh Fun Factory for adults.Yes, the blades are very sharp.Yes the unit seems awfully expensive for what it is but it seems pretty sturdy - time will tell.What sold me on this brand over other brands is the ability to buy replacement brands.

When you use the horizontal model, you end up with a pile of "pasta" as well as a nail-shaped thing, a round disk of vegetable with a core about as thick as a pencil.This works it's way through a hole near the blade.For some veggies, like zucchini or cucumber, this is good - as this is the wet, seedy, messy part of the veggie.For others, like carrot, I think this model just wastes a lot.(BUT if you have kids who like carrot sticks, it's good...really, there are things you can do with the "waste" so it's not REALLY wasted - smoothies, veggie stock, etc)

The upright model does not have the hole to make this core.Instead it just grinds up the whole veggie, with the seedy stuff getting really mashed and wet near the center of the device, where the hole would be in the other one.

By the time we decide to try the upright model, instead of send it back, we were out of zucchini, so we used cucumber in both.The horizontal model makes drier, neater "pasta," I think due to the elimination of the core.The upright model makes wetter, slightly messier "pasta."Not super disgusting messy or anything, but you will see a difference if you compare both machines.

The downside of this is, we think - though we didn't try - the upright machine may be better for veggies like carrots, daikon, etc where you could use the whole thing.No waste.

So which is better?For zucchini and cukes, the horizontal machine is a little better.For carrots, we think the upright is better.Both will suffice for either - though I still don't know about cabbage!I am happy I bought my horizontal model, and my mother in law is happy so far with her freebie upright.The blades are the same between the two machines, it's just that lack of a hole that is different.I guess it comes down to budget and what veggies you think you will do most of.(And you can't just drill a hole in the upright model!!!It's really a hole with a round metal blade in it, like an apple corer)

So there you have it.A review finally comparing the two.I hope this helps some people out.Maybe I will update when my mother in law actually gives zucchini a go on her machine.

Norpro Adjustable Cheese Slicer Review

Our last Norpro wire cheese slicer lasted 12 years!

The quality and durability of the Norpro line of cheese slicers gives me no reason to consider another brand.

This particular model is heavier than it appears (more so than our last one), which makes slicing firm cheeses a cinch. The handle is well balanced so you need only set the slicer on the cheese and push down gently. Your cheese cuts evenly and easily.

Cleanup is easy, too. We handwash the slicer, using an old toothbrush to clean around the adjustable screws.

In summary, this is a great value for the price and durability. We often buy firm cheeses in 2-pound blocks, which saves us a lot of money over sliced, deli cheese.

NOVEMBER 2009 UPDATE

The cutting wire finally broke, so we switched to the spare wire (included) today. That means this model lasted just one year. We wondered what was different than our past experience and, finally, concluded that our new kitchen helpers -- our sons, ages 5 and 7 -- may have something to do with it. Anyway, I'll post another update when this wire breaks. Hopefully, we'll get another year and more out of the replacement wire.

Oxo Good Grips Wire Cheese Slicer with Replaceable Wires Review

Oxo generally makes great products, but every so often they come up with a dud.This is one of the duds.The problem is in the tensioning mechanism, which consists of a spiral gear that engages a toothed track molded into the end of the slicing wire.Turning the spiral gear with your thumb moves the track and tightens the wire.Unfortunately, the gear is made from plastic and is prone to break.When the first slicer we bought broke I thought it might be a fluke, given Oxo's good reputation.Now that the second one has broken in the same way, I'm concluding that it's a bad design.If Oxo ever replaces the plastic thumbwheel with a metal one this product might be great, but until that time I'd stay away.

I bought this along with several other kitchen gadgets using Amazons 4-for-3 promotion.It's been something I've wanted, but didn't necessarily need. Now that we have it though, I'm very glad I bought it.

It makes slicing apples easy and quick. Normally when I make apple pie I peel, cut and core by hand, but with this it cut out one step all together and saved quite a bit of time.Plus the apples were even so they cooked better.

Norpro Bread Slicerand Guide with Crumb Catcher Review

Only two things could be adjusted for me to like this slicer better.1 - the grooves could be deeper to keep from slicing into the wood. 2 - the guide could be adjustable.Other than that, it is a handy tool to use with baked bread. We use a bread machine that makes a pound and a half loaf. This has really removed the guess work of slicing. The bread should be cooled a little before attempting to slice.We often take bread to functions and using this we now have nice even slices. It is a lot neater using it rather than a plain board, too.All in all, a great kitchen aide.

Even though this item only frenches one bean it a time it's consistant, sharp and fairly quick to use; afterall, most of us are not going to be frenching 25 lbs. of beans in a sitting. Works as advertised! One note of caution to make your first experience a little more positive: Open the stick of butter and let it sit on the waxed paper enclosure for about 30 minutes at room temperature. This will ensure the slicer performs as desired without damaging the wires. Then, as shared in another review, after slicing the butter turn the slicer upside down, waxed paper and all, and use the waxed paper to push the butter off the slicer. Not being able to find a decent sturdy cheese slicer at the supermarket I thought I'd try on-line. The Anolon Cheese Slicer looked like a solid product so I ordered one. I was not disappointed. Progressive International Avocado Slicer Review

I am an avacado fan.So, when I came across this tool, I thought, "aha... something to save me time in the kitchen".Well, that's only partially true.

If I have an avacado the same width as the avacado slicer, then all is right with the world.A simple motion of pressing into the avacado half and pulling towards me, and I end up with evenly spaced slices. What could be simpler or quicker!

Alas, there is a downside.If your avacado is smaller in width than the slicer, your in for a messy situation.The slicer no longer slides through the avacado, it gets caught on the tough skin (it is wider than the avacado in this situation) and the once even slices are now mashed and part of the avacado peel sticks to the slicer.I spent more time cleaning up after the slicer and my slices were no longer uniform.In this case, I would have been better off using my knife.

My prior experience with egg slicers has been with the ones that have thin wire wrapped around a metal bar, the kind one gets at Wal-Mart, etc. When I first saw this, I wondered why anyone would want to spend $7.00 on an egg slicer. As fate would have it, one of the wires broke in my egg slicer. Not wanting to have to go out for another one (it's hard for me to get around), I decided to fork out the money for one.

I was very skeptical when I bought this product, but I hate to slice tomatoes and so I figured I'd give it a chance. Apple Peeler/Corer/Slicer Review

We found the Apple Peeler on sale at a home store and bought it on an impulse. My expectations were fairly low and I am happy to say that it performed way better than it looked like it was going to. The only real issue is with the very poor instructions, so some trial and error testing was needed.

The keys to getting good results are:

1) Use symmetrical Apples or Potatoes
2) The firmer the better
3) Take time align the Apple so the core can be cleanly removed

Setting the contraption up is very easy. The base firmly attaches to most flat surfaces via a suction cup, which is nice because it can be positioned over our sink to catch the peels.

We love how quickly this peels and cores a lot of apples! Our kids also got a kick out of using it, so that was a big plus as well.

KitchenAid RVSA Slicer/Shredder Attachment for Stand Mixers Review

Nota Bene:
I have tried to contact Kitchen-Aid for over a month,wrote 4 EM via the KitchenAid customer support Website, and beside their promise to answer within 3 business day, I have yet to hear from them.
I'm truly disappointed with their customer support and the RSVA.

What a deception!
Probably the worst shredder I ever used.

I purchase this product in the idea that KitchenAid was a good brand (by experience), but I must admit that I have the feeling that I paid $50 for a very, very poor shredder, which should be sold $15 maximum. A $7 Walmart hand shredder makes a better job.

I have the feeling that KitchenAid just ripped me off.

I'm a mechanical engineer and I love to cook, and I'm normally the type to buy one excellent knife instead of 2 poor ones, but this time, I was fooled.
So , let's review the product:

First of all, the cones are not stainless steel, but regular steel, badly chromed.
It means that, one day or another, they will rust.

How can you tell? Use a magnet, if it is not sticking, it's a 18/10 stainless steel. (18% Chrome + 10% Nickel, a TRUE Stainless Steel)
Try with your kitchenaid mixing bowl, and you'll see.
It also means that if you ever try to sharpen the slicing blades, you'll take off the chrome and it WILL rust very quickly.

I'm sorry, but a brand like Kitchenaid should AT LEAST, provides Stainless Steel cones. Especially at 50 bucks a piece. (and I suppose that's why it is stated HOUSEHOLD USE ONLY), not allowed to use regular steel in a restaurant)

The blades are either dull, unevenly sharpened, or not at all(sides).It mashes or puree very well, but the cuts are uneven and messy. I just wanted a slicer, not a musher.
The sharpening on (my) slicing cones is visibly uneven. one side slices, the other not.

The gap between the cones and the body is too big, food goes in, get pushed in by the dull cones to end up in a mess.

The cones rotate unevenly, off balance, which adds to the previous mess.

The length of the blades is smaller than the size of the spout. (the cutting lengthshould be a least the size of the spout, not smaller )
In short: everything that goes is those corners is miserably mashed So, as a result, in my opinion: buy something else.
Add $20 and buy yourself something decent. Plus, the attachment is so bulky that a food processor will not take much space.
My grade on a 10 scale: 3
Probably the worst shredder I ever used.
And if you ever decide to buy one , please contact me , for $25,you'll have an almost brand new one.

I love to mix raw carrot shreds (much longer and thinner than pre shredded bagged stuff you can buy), I think of it as carrot "angel hair" with cucumber ribbon, and other shreds like daikon and jicama for veggie "pasta salads".Steamed zucchini, carrot, and parsnip shreds make a great substitute for pasta with tomato sauce.

If these are things you think you'll eat a lot and you like gadgets, this is a good buy.If you're looking to make perfect fancy garnishes, this isn't as precise as the expensive model spiral slicers.(or as versatile, I think some of the $250 models make more different sizes of shreds.)

Note on using it:read the instructions.You need to cut the ends of the vegetable even to get good shreds, and you need to apply steady downward pressure to the handle while turning, or you wont get long continuous ribbons or shreds. If this kind of thing is not instinctive to you, it may take some practice.Don't give up afer your first try, buy a big bag of carrots and practice the rotation/pressure to get it right.

So far it has cleaned up really well and pretty quickly, but you'll want to rinse it right after use because veggie matter does stick in the "shreds" blade and if it dries could be a pain to clean out. (carrots will stain the white plastic part orange, but it doesn't hurt it any.)

I love it and use it almost every day, but I wouldn't call it a "must have" for everyone.If you're not really excited about the prospect of shredded veggies for a salad or veggies as an alternative to pasta, you probably would not use it much.

if you could adjust the thickness of the ribbons/shreds and it were a teensy bit sturdier, I'd give this five stars.

Pinzon Apple and Potato Peeler, Corer, and Slicer Review

A brief video showing the Pizon Apple P/C/S in action. I was surprised that the gadget works as well as it does and is so easy to use and clean up.I neglected to mention in the video that you can lock the peeling arm back if you only want to core and slice your apples. It is solid product that will have a home in my kitchen for a good time to come.

Amco Avocado Slicer and Pitter Review

I received this as a gift and like it enough to maybe give as a gift. It makes very nice even thin slices, great for sandwiches. I have a slicer that is similiar that makes thicker slices. I am not sure it is worth the money unless you make a lot of Avacado tomato sandwiches or garnishes.The slices are a little thin for salads in my opinion.

Calphalon Easy Grip Apple Slicer Review

I was thinking about getting the apple divider that Cook's Illustrated liked, the Williams-Sonoma Dial-A-Slice. The Calphalon Easy Grip Apple Slicer looked similiar, however you can't adjust the size of the slices. I'm very happy that I got this one instead. (About half the price, too!) Very easy to handle, although it takes some strength, and leaves a perfect core for the squirrels to enjoy. Quick and easy! It hasn't rusted like my previous one, either. Just keep in mind that it has sharp blades. My 7-year old thought she could cut her own apple and got a bit of a nick on her finger.
