Oxo Good Grips Hand-Held Mandoline Slicer Review

Oxo Good Grips Hand-Held Mandoline SlicerWell, I'm shocked that there are ANY positive reviews for this gadget. If ANYBODY is the "gadget queen" in the kitchen, it's me.I own and have used the Boerner V-slicer for at least 15 years and love it, but sometimes when you just have a small, quick job to do, I thought this might qualify - so I went and bought one.I think it's terrible!First of all, the finger protector is almost unusable. The points on the underside meant to grab and hold onto the food are so shallow that they don't want to penetrate the piece of vegetable or fruit or maintain its grip on it more than one swipe across the cutter. So, I resorted to just holding the apple quarters, in this case, with my hand with plans to just not slice the last little chunk of each piece when I was getting too close to the blade. The adjusting of the cutting thickness is already a big pain as the little control/slider wants to stick at each junction, making it difficult to change the thicknesses. When sliding the apple in the downward motion, it made perfect and uniform slices. But, when you are sliding it back up (the hand motion is usually rapidly sliding the pieces of food down and then back up across the blade) - well, the food tends to sort of get caught in the returning motion on the far end of the blade. There's a little ridge or separation bet. the blade and the support so it catches the food on the upward motion, frequently "yanking" it out of your hand. This causes the food to drop away and creates a potentially dangerous environment as your hand is normally moving back & forth fast so that you could end up slicing your fingers on the way back down again across the blade before you even realize that the food fell away from your hand.Is that understandable??Sorry, it's just dangerous and because of it's poor design, it encourages people to not use the finger protector which is an accident waiting to happen.I'm returning mine.

Kyocera Wide Julienne Slicer, Red Review

Kyocera Wide Julienne Slicer, RedI have used this slicer several times a week for almost 6 months. It is still as sharp as the day I got it.I use it mainly to slice carrots and cucumbers.Slicing is fast and easy.I can slice an entire cucumber in less than a minute.I generally just rinse the slicer well and let it air dry.I put it in the dishwasher periodically or after slicing carrots (to get rid of the orange carrot color). The slicer comes with a small plastic thingy with little plastic spikes to use as a holder when the vegetable or fruit gets small (to avoid thinly slicing your fingers -- I have no doubt that this would slice fingers quite easily, although I have thus far avoided testing that theory!).The little plastic guard works, but it takes me some doing to keep a carrot or other really hard vegetable from slipping off, as the little plastic spikes work better on softer foods. The slicer is very thin, so storage is easy, even in my cramped kitchen.I lean it against the inside wall of a cabinet, slicing side toward the wall.I wouldn't want to stick it in a drawer, as I would be afraid of slicing my fingertips off while looking for it.The only real drawback I see is that the thickness of slices is not adjustable. You only get paperthin.I will have to see if they make one of these for thicker slices, as sometimes I want a thicker slice.

Bron Original Stainless Steel Mandolin Slicer Review

Bron Original Stainless Steel Mandolin SlicerI have used many different slicers (V-type, diagonal) and this stainless steel Bron which I also own is my favorite by far.The Borner V slicer I own does not have legs and is thus unstable, it is okay for quick non-uniform shredding and slicing. This model has it's own legs so your two hands can focus on the cutting. If you simply pay attention to where the blades are (put the cell phone down), you shouldn't cut yourself. It has a sliding guard for the food to rest in which attaches to the mandoline (which in the picture of the item is shown attached upside-down) and I believe to be safer than the free floating guards of the others. One plus of the steel construction is absolutely true uniform slices which are produced, which has not been experienced with plastic slicers. If you have the money, it is a great investment that should last you your lifetime.

Börner Thin Julienne Vegetable Shredder Review

Börner Thin Julienne Vegetable ShredderThe product description states: "Features finger grips and non-skid feet."

The safety grip shown in the illustration does NOT come with the shredder and must be purchased separately. Nor is there any other finger grip. The shredder does NOT have non-slip feet. I was not happy about these discrepancies. It does cut a nice julienne. I kept it, but it is dangerous to use without some sort of hand grip. So I ended up paying an extra $7 for the hand grip. Not happy, not pleased with this brand, and will replace this product as soon as Kuhn Rikon comes out with something comparable.

Victorinox 12-Inch Granton Edge Slicing Knife with Fibrox Handle Review

Victorinox 12 inch Granton Edge Slicing Knife with Fibrox HandleFor years I've used an electric knife to slice turkey, roasts, ham, etc.No matter how well I sharpen a carving or chef's knife, I've been unable to avoid sawing back and forth to complete a cut, or worse, having the meat just tear apart as I cut.And thin, deli-style slices are just a dream, even with a sharp electric knife.

This slicer has cured all that. It's long enough to complete a breast cut on a 30-lb turkey in one stroke, and wide enough to make that stroke in a dead-straight line with little or no guidance from me.Thin ham slices for sandwiches are no problem at all.And it's sharp enough cut through the tenderest meat as if through warm butter. The small grooves on the blade seem to keep slices from sticking, making for an effortless cut.

I bought this knife on the basis of a review in Cook's Illustrated. You can spend more, or less, but I don't think you can buy a better slicer.

Product Description:
From the inventors of the famous Swiss Army knife comes a line of fine cutlery designed for accomplished and aspiring chefs at work or in the home. Each blade in the Stamped collection is expertly made in Switzerland from high-carbon stainless steel and undergoes a special tempering process for an edge that can be resharpened again and again. The result is a knife that can keep its original sharpness throughout the entire life of the blade. Each blade is conical ground throughout its length and depth, and laser tested to ensure optimum cutting power and durability. Ergonomically designed to minimize wrist tension, the unique, patented Fibrox handles are slip resistant when wet. Plus, all Stamped cutlery with Fibrox handles is approved by the National Sanitary Foundation (NSF). Although cutlery steel is naturally sanitary, materials and construction details of these handles minimize crevices that may otherwise offer hospitality to bacteria. The Victorinox Stamped collection is an extensive range with open-stock pieces as well as handy and versatile sets.
The 12-inch Granton Edge Slicing Knife has a safe, rounded tip and gives a long, straight edge to maximize the cutting surface. The flutes in the Granton Edge blade minimize friction, which helps the knife glide through meat with ease, making paper thin slices and preventing food from sticking to the blade. All Stamped cutlery should be washed by hand for best care, and Victorinox covers each piece with a lifetime warranty against manufacturer defects.
From the Manufacturer
Who is Victorinox?
Although Victorinox is known the world over as the creator of the Original Swiss Army Knife, the company started out in 1884 as a cutlery workshop. By the time company creator Karl Elsener delivered his first pocket knife to the Swiss Army, his cutlery business was already booming. Over the next century, Victorinox cutlery became a top-rated choice among professionals worldwide, with over 300 blades to offer.
Victorinox knives have regularly appeared as highly ranked and recommended kitchen tools in Cook's Illustrated, Men's Health, The Cincinnati Enquirer, New York Magazine, and Natural Health, just to name a few. In 2009, the company announced a partnership with professional chef, Daniel Humm, of Eleven Madison Park in New York City. In addition, building on the success of its cutlery business, Victorinox has brought all the same quality and expertise to a wider range of products and accessories, including other kitchen tools, pocket tools, watches, luggage, and clothing.
Who is R.H. Forschner?
Victorinox had been a staple in European commercial cutlery for over 50 years when approached by New York's R.H. Forschner, known since 1855 as a builder of scales for butchers, to be their sole cutlery supplier. The two companies joined forces in 1937, and R.H. Forschner subsequently became North America's dominant professional brand, as ubiquitous in the bustling meatpacking plants of the Midwest as it is in the gleaming, four-star restaurant kitchens of Midtown Manhattan.
As a division of Victorinox/Swiss Army Brands, R.H. Forschner marketed cutlery under the brand name "RH Forschner by Victorinox" and distributed to the commercial, food service, and retail trade classes. That brand has been considered a top choice of professionals worldwide with over 300 styles of blades bearing the R.H. Forschner name. However, in 2009, in conjunction with Victorinox's 125th anniversary, the company, Victorinox Swiss Army, Inc., has decided to remove the "RH Forschner" name from all blades. Blades thenceforth only include the "Victorinox" name.
What is a stamped blade?
A stamped knife can usually be identified by the absence of a bolster. Stamped blades are cut into their shapes from cold-rolled pieces of steel and then ground, tempered, and sharpened. Creating them requires many less steps than forging and results in lighter, narrower blades. Some professionals prefer the thicker, heavier forged blades, but many pros, who spend much of their day cutting and slicing, enjoy a lighter knife since it's less fatiguing and easier to manipulate at speed.
Stamped knives are easier to produce and therefore less expensive. They perform very well and can approach the quality of a forged blade, but not the weight or feel. Victorinox manufactures a complete range of stamped blades with unique, patented Fibrox handles and they are considered among the greatest values in the knife industry.
What knives do I need to own?
Knife choice or selection is determined by many factors--size, function, style, and preference. The most important factor is function. Different knives have different uses. It is important to use the proper knife for a specific task, since proper knife selection and the use of a proper-sized, sharp knife make for safe cutting. General kitchen tasks and the knife to use for them are as follows:
Paring: The most common to own and use, a paring knife is generally for small cutting jobs and peeling of vegetables or fruit. The blade size is usually from three to four inches. Choose the shape and size to fit your hand. Since this is one of the more versatile knives, owning more than one is recommended.
Chef's: The most important tool and essential to every cook, a chef‘s knife is most often used in a rocking method to mince, dice, and chop vegetables and herbs. This one is known as the chef's best friend.
Slicer: Most commonly used to slice meats, poultry, and seafood, the slicer is an important companion to any host or hostess.
Boning: As its name suggests, a boning knife is used to trim or remove meat and fish from the bone.
Bread: Designed with a special edge, a bread knife makes easy work of cutting through crusty bread, pastries, or any item with a crust and a soft interior.
Fillet: Most often used by pros and seasoned home chefs, the fillet knife is used to fillet meat and fish.
Cleaver: An important addition to any collection, a cleaver is often used to cut or chop through bones.
Santoku: This knife combines the features of a cleaver with a chef's knife. The curved blade helps the rocking motion used for chopping, and the wide blade works well for scooping sliced food off a cutting board and for crushing garlic. The santoku can also be used to slice meat and has a narrow spine for making thin cuts.
Utility: An all-purpose knife often referred to as a sandwich knife, the utility knife peels and slices fruits and vegetables, and even carves small meats.
Shaping: With its curved blade, a shaping knife is great for small precision cuts where control is essential, such as peeling, trimming, or garnishing.
What are the different knife edges and what do they do?
Straight: The vast majority of Victorinox knives come with a straight or fine edge. This means it has a perfect taper along the blade and no serrations. It is designed to cut without tearing or shredding.
Serrated: An edge designed with small, jagged teeth along the edge.
Scalloped: A blade with waves along the edge generally used to cut breads with a hard crust and soft interior, as well as tougher-skinned fruits and vegetables.
Granton: This edge has hollowed-out grooves or dimples on the sides of the blade. These grooves fill with the fat and juices of the product being cut, allowing for thin, even cuts without tearing. Even with the grooves, these are still straight-edge knives and can be honed with a sharpening steel.
How should I care for my cutlery?
After use, knives should not be allowed to soak in water. The best practice is to hand wash and dry them immediately. This is especially true if they have been used on fruit or salty foods, which may cause some staining, even on stainless steel. Most knives require very little maintenance and it is worth the effort to protect your investment.
Though Victorinox knives are dishwasher safe, this is strongly discouraged. The dishwasher's agitation may cause damage. Additionally, harsh detergents can be harmful and cause pitting and spotting on the blades. The handles may also discolor and develop a white film with constant use of the dishwasher. Plus, intense heat associated with dishwashers is not good for the temper of the blade.
How do I keep my knives sharp?
All quality knives require proper maintenance to keep them in perfect cutting shape. The best of edges will quickly dull if it strikes metal, glass, or Formica. A wooden cutting board makes the best cutting surface. And, if a slip occurs, a proper cutting board is safer for the user. Frequent use of a Victorinox sharpening steel will keep blades in tip top working condition. All straight-edge knives need steeling to keep their edges.

How to "Steel" a Knife
1. Hold the steel firmly in your left hand with the guard positioned to stop the blade should it slip.
2. Hold the knife in your right hand and place on top part of steel as shown.
3. Raise back of blade one-eighth inch.
4. Now, moving the blade only, draw it across the steel in an arching curve, pivoted at your wrist. The blade tip should leave the steel about two-thirds of the way down.
5. Repeat the same action with the Blade on the bottom side of the steel. Always maintain the same pressure and angle on both sides of the steel.
6. Repeat five or six times.
When a sharpening steel no longer does the job, it's time to take the knife to a qualified knife sharpener who will place a new edge on it. This, along with use of the sharpening steel, will give you many years of sharp, safe blades.
Please note that electric knife sharpeners can be harmful. They have to be used carefully as they remove too much metal, can harm the temper of the blade, and most important can change the factory-applied edge angle.
How should I store my knives?
Safety is the biggest concern of storage, both to the user and to protect the knife's edge. Choices include a knife magnet, knife block, drawer insets, and also individual knife protectors.

Presto 02910 SaladShooter Electric Slicer/Shredder Review

Presto 02910 SaladShooter Electric Slicer/ShredderWe laughed and laughed when we received this "as seen on TV" slicing and, well, grating "miracle product" as a gift. Who would actually use such a crazy thing?Well, it turns out that we would, frequently. It may not dice, but it does slice beautifully - thin and uniform, as well as grating everything from cheese to potatoes to carrots to ... you name it. We use it almost daily. If you're a vegetable eater or a cheese lover, you won't know how you lived without it. Easy to assemble and disassemble, and it's dishwasher safe, although you do have to position the parts correctly to maximize water flow and cleaning. You can do a fine or a coarse grate, a straight or a wavy slice. You can even get an ice shaver for making snow cones. It does have some limitations. While it grates all kinds of cheeses (softer cheeses work best when chilled), it can't slice cheese at all. Nor does it slice onions, celery or other "stringy" vegetables well. It will grate them, though. It slices cucumbers, carrots, summer squash and similar vegetables beautifully, but the chute is too narrow to slice most cukes or zukes whole -- you'll have to split them lengthwise.

Meat Slicer Review

Meat SlicerExcellent product for the price.
Instruction booklet/manual not very clear or too helpful.
Nearly broke the blade retaining screw trying to remove the blade after the first use - that's why the 4-stars and not 5 - need to remove screw by turning it clockwise.
Slices very thin perfectly - did some cheddar cheese, smoked ham, and roast beef with no problems.
Used machine constantly for 30 minutes first time and no "burnouts" or burning smell from motor. Cleanup is easy - once you remember to unscrew clockwise!
Definitely for home use, not an industrial strength machine but well fabricated and built.

Progressive International Vegetable/French Fry Cutter Review

Progressive International Vegetable/French Fry CutterThis is an excellent cutter, that comes with several different size blade fittings (for thinner or thicker fries). It sets up very easily, and can be easily disassembled and popped into the dishwasher.
The one complaint I have is that the blade base should be a bit bigger so that large spuds can be passed through without having to cut the spud into smaller bits first.
The lever arm is a bit short, so that my wife has asked me to cut the potatos - since some weight has to be put into operating the lever.
It makes uniformly cut fries, that cook evenly. It makes the joy of fresh cut fries accessible to more people - so please skip the frozen fries and give yourself a real treat!

Oneida Polished Black Mandolin Interchangable Slicer Review

Oneida Polished Black Mandolin Interchangable SlicerThe product cuts well and makes french fries pretty well. I bought this for cutting potatoes and all remarks are based on that use. The problem I had with it is the reverse end of the cutting blade... It's not flat to the slide bed when installed for normal (non-crinkle) cutting. This means that when you have made a cut and are sliding the food back up the ramp for the next cut (the back stroke), the bulged up crinkle blade grabs the food and grates a bit of it off adding a lot of drag. This would also make very thin slices impossible because they always have one side damaged by the curved crinkle blade. If you know someone with a bench vise and thick leather gloves the blade could probably be corrected. Always be careful when handling the blade for any reason, it is very sharp.

Another issue that might cause a problem for people cutting thick slices is the location of the knob that holds the main blade in place... dead center so your thick slices will run right into it as they are being cut. This increases the force you must use and damages your thick slices.

All in all I would not buy this product if I had this information in advance, no reviews where available when I ordered. I am a handy person and have corrected the first problem above and I think I can live with the second issue, so I will not be returning the item. I really expected better from Oneida, but you do get what you pay for in the end. The only mandolins I have ever used were restaurant grade and you can expect to pay at least $100 for one of those models. If you plan on using the slicer a lot, spend the money for a good, well-reviewed product.

Börner Disc Slicer Review

Börner Disc SlicerThis mini-mandoline works very well, but directions warn the user to "always use the safety holder". No safety holder is included and none was offered at time of purchase. On the box is stated, "Safety holder sold separately". Certainly, the safety holder is a necessity unless one wishes to include one's fingertips in the dinner salad. The holder, since it is not included, should have been offered for sale at the same time. It is, of course, available, but the second shipping costs more than the holder. We are not pleased.

Joyce Chen Saladacco Spiral Slicer, White Review

Joyce Chen Saladacco Spiral Slicer, WhiteI had to give this product two stars for the concept and at least one star because it does exactly what the manufacturer says it does, but nothing more plus not everything you make using this product turns out completely awful. Versatile this tool is not! To start your vegetables must be 1-inch in diameter and 3-1/2 inches in length. After you've finished cutting you are left with at least 1-inch of unuseable vegetable, unless you're willing to do the rest of your creative cutting by hand, not only does this limit you but it also creates a great deal of waste. You have only 2 blade choices which are housed in a poorly constructed plastic contraption that easily separates if pressed on in the wrong spot.

You have your choice of either Spaghetti type strands or spiral slices but don't expect anything pretty with your spaghetti strands because your only option is a very fine tooth edged blade which creates very fine strands of mush depending on what you're cutting. However, this product does have one redeeming trait and that's with the use of the flat edged blade it does create fairly nice looking spiral slices. If you're expecting true versatility than you will have to cough up the dough for "The Benriner Cooks Helper", "Benriner Cook Help" or the "Benriner Asian Sprial Slicer" (they're all the same) which gives you (3) Tooth edged blades (fine, medium and Coarse) as well as (1) flat edged blade, the size of your vegetables do still matter for cutting but you don't throw away nearly as much. Shop around for the best price!

MIU Stainless-Steel Professional Mandoline Slicer Review

MIU Stainless-Steel Professional Mandoline SlicerI am skeptical of fancy kitchen tools because I tend to be a kitchen purist who believes that with a good set of knives and some skills a wanna-be-chef can slice paper-thin potatoes, onions, or anything that comes along the way. So, when this mandoline was brought home, I was ready to find faults.

My first impression was that this was a larger mandoline than I had seen before; it's really more of a professional size and demands some counter space. Setup is simple: expand the two "feet" which are covered with non-slip rubber and the mandoline sets up on the counter at an appropriate angle. Six blades also come in a handy plastic box. One thing that was a tad strange was that the box seems to hold only five blades; so the sixth one hangs homeless! However, the blades are very easy to slide into or out of the mandoline.

The piece that you hold your vegetables with looks serious but operates quite simply. You put your vegetable on one side and push it into the 'pins' which dig into it. This also pushes out holding end. The trick is to keep a steady pressure on this holding end and slice on the blade. You can adjust thickness of the cut using a small lever underneath the cutting surface that angles the resting surface-- a simple and elegant design. I see some reviewers have talked about half of the vegetable getting caught in the blade. Two words of advice: one, you have to learn to push veggies into the food-holder so that the pins can grip on and not slide off. Two, keep constant pressure on the food-holder--it takes about a minute to get used to.

Let's talk about the actual food that comes out of this device. Depending on which blade you use, you can get julienne, waffle, or sliced cuts. I found that after a couple of potatoes, I started getting very even waffle cuts straight to the last slice! Something that even the sharpest knives and months of practice will not do!

PROS:
- Very well-constructed.
- Matches with professional stainless steel kitchen appliances and tools.
- Handy blade-set holder.
- Non-slip feet.
- Easy to adjust thickness of cuts.
- Dishwasher safe.

CON:
- The manual does not recommend how to place food in the food holder.

Kyocera Adjustable Mandolin Slicer, Black Review

Kyocera Adjustable Mandolin Slicer, BlackThe Kyocera adjustable mandoline slicer is an excellent product! I have used mine for almost 1 year and have no major complaints, the only one being that Kyocera could have designed the guard to snap in place covering the blade for storage. Microplane 47001 Adjustable Slider Food Slicer Review

Microplane 47001 Adjustable Slider Food SlicerThis thing is great!I've tried several mandolines--from the top-of-the-line unit to an inexpensive, but highly rated V-slicer, and another handheld.I sent the former back, gave the V-slicer away and the handheld broke.None of them served my purpose. All the blade changing and/or adjusting with the stationary mandolines was awkward and a lot of trouble considering I wasn't cooking for a restaurant--I just wanted to make salads for one or two, or a variety of other things, but usually in rather small quantities. This slicer is perfect. Now I can slice a leek, a carrot and part of a cucumber directly onto my salad in seconds.I can slice beets or other veggies very quickly and conveniently directly into the pot.The large knob on the bottom of this unit turns easily to create the desired slice thickness and a quick swish and rinse leaves it clean for the next time.I get high-end mandoline quality slices from the super sharp blade, but without all the set up and clean up time. This unit is sturdy and reliable.I couldn't be happier with my purchase.Between this and my Alligator dicer, my fruit and vegetable ingredients look professionally prepared and are done in a flash.

Update 9/5/09
This useful tool has been great for helping process summer bounty, most especially with getting the kernels off corncobs so they can be frozen.I've tried other products for that, but they are not satisfactory, where this tool allows me to run the cob down against the blade and in a few passes, all the kernels are in the bowl.I can do several ears in only a few minutes.I use one of those 'Kevlar' gloves to make sure I don't cut myself and it works great. Zyliss 4-in-1 Slicer and Grater Review

Zyliss 4-in-1 Slicer and GraterI was skeptical when I received this slicer/grater, but it really does a nice job. There are two slicing blades, each with a snap on guard for storage, and two different graters. The different blades/graters are easily changed and cleaned.I do notice some staining of the white plastic by some vegetables (red cabbages, sweet potatoes), but that doesn't really bother me.Everything snaps together for storage, too, so you don't have to chase down attachments.A very nice kitchen product.

Chef's Choice 667 International Professional Electric Food Slicer with 10-Inch Diameter Blade Review

Chef's Choice 667 International Professional Electric Food Slicer with 10 inch Diameter BladeThe Chef's Choice 667 slicer performs as advertised with its sturdy construction, powerful motor, large 10" belt-driven blade, and smooth quiet operation. This slicer does indeed produce deli-thin slices!
Out of the Box
The Chef's Choice 667 slicer comes out of the box with a 10" stainless-steel blade, blade sharpener, owner's manual, Allen wrench, small plastic serving tray, and temporary blade guard used for handling the sharp blade.
The plastic blade guard easily screws onto the blade using two large plastic knobs. This temporary guard covers the razor sharp edge of the blade and makes it easy to handle when it's removed from the slicer or during cleaning.
The plastic food tray is used to catch the food as it's being sliced, but it's too small and does not fit squarely under the blade.
The Allen wrench is used for removing the main blade guard during cleaning.
The blade sharpener is attached to the top of the unit and is held in place by a thumb screw. Simply loosen the screw, lift, and pivot the sharpener into place. A rear-mounted grinding wheel sharpens the blade while a front spring-loaded push-in grinding wheel removes any burrs.
The included non-serrated blade is excellent for slicing meats, vegetables, cheeses, etc., but is not well suited for breads. To slice bread you'll want to buy the optional serrated blade (~$90).
First Impressions
Operating the slicer is straightforward. Plug in the unit, load the carriage with the food to be sliced, flip the on/off switch to "on", and finally press the safety interlock switch. The interlock switch prevents the unit from starting up should the on/off switch be left on while plugging it in, a nice safety feature!
Once powered on, you must exert some pressure on the food pusher and slide the carriage forward and back while setting the thickness knob to your desired setting.
The slicer itself is very sturdy and appears to be well made. The main body is made of die-cast metal and the blade stainless steel. The carriage is smooth and rides on a single ball bearing. The motor/blade is powerful and is belt driven.
Some parts of the slicer utilize plastic screws, namely the friction adjustments for the sliding carriage and the thickness dial. There is also a small plastic piece which keeps the food pusher from scraping the carriage. This plastic piece fell out of its hole while I was operating the unit. I used SuperGlue to reattach.
The carriage is secured to the sliding arm with two bolts and small thumb nuts. These small nuts are awkward to remove and/or tighten and require the use of pliers. The bolt holes are slightly oversized and require lock washers, which I do not like. I would have preferred larger nuts (or knobs) and properly sized bolt holes to facilitate easy removal and reinstallation of the carriage tray.
The travel on the food pusher is somewhat limited and you may have to cut large roasts in half so they'll fit in the carriage. The bushings on the food pusher arm rod are made of plastic, I would have preferred brass or some other material.
Slice thickness is controlled by a large knob calibrated in millimeters. Maximum thickness is 0.6 inches. Once set, I didn't have to make any further adjustments. Friction is set by a plastic screw inside the base of the unit.
The bottom of the slicer is covered with a black plastic cover which seems a little flimsy for a "commercial quality" slicer. Four screws and four rubber feet secure the bottom cover to the unit.
The unit is moderately heavy, roughly 30 pounds, and it stays put on the counter.
First Experience
My first experience with this slicer was making thin sliced (almost shaved) roast beef sandwiches. I slow roasted a 10 pound Sirloin tip roast until it was rare and juicy. The slicer effortlessly sliced the meat to perfection. The motor showed no signs of stress and the carriage moved smoothly and easily.
This is my second food slicer. My first was an inexpensive Rival slicer which could not handle roast beef. It was noisy, flimsy, and downright dangerous to use. The cuts were uneven, thicker at the top and thinner at the bottom. I was worried that getting paper thin slices from a consumer-grade slicer was not possible. The 667 proved me wrong. It surpassed all of my expectations and performed similarly to the big Hobarts that I've used in the past.
Caveats
I do have some major complaints about this otherwise excellent slicer.
There are several joints in the housing of this slicer which allow meat juices drip inside the body of the unit. One such joint is located right where the motor housing attaches to the main base. This joint is located right where the sliced food falls as it's being cut, a very poor design. There is another joint where the blade thickness arm protrudes through the base. Juices from my roast beef dripped into the base of the slicer through these joints and started dripping out near one of the rubber feet on the opposite end of the unit. Yuk! The only way to clean up this mess was to remove the screws, rubber feet, and plastic cover from the bottom of the slicer. One shouldn't have to disassemble an appliance to properly clean it!
Also, to remove and clean the blade, you must use the Allen wrench to remove a single screw in the center of the front blade guard (poor design). Next you attach the plastic blade guard. Finally, using a screwdriver, you must remove three Phillips-head screws which secure the blade to the spindle. Not only is this inconvenient, but the screw heads will eventually wear and/or strip after repeated cleanings. Note: The blade should be removed to thoroughly clean the slicer since it's difficult to clean behind the blade. Another poor design.
In Summary
Overall, I am very happy with the performance of this slicer. It's sturdy, powerful, quiet, and slices exceptionally well. However, clean-up is another story.
This slicer is definitely "consumer grade" (not "commercial grade" as advertised) and will make a fine addition to any gourmet kitchen. When slicing juicy foods, I'd recommend using lots of paper towels placed strategically to catch the liquids before they can get inside the unit.

Waring Pro FS150 Food Slicer Review

Waring Pro FS150 Food SlicerThis thing slices well, then comes the impractical task of trying to clean it. The tray does not detatch from the base, which cannot be put in water because it containes the motor. Pieces of food work their way into the motor area. After removing the blade (using tools) you must remove a plastic cover with 3 screws and dig out the pieces of food. I could not believe how bad a design it was from a cleaning standpoint. The tray that slides back and forth with the food has a stainless top that is literally two-faced taped onto the plastic base. This was very poor from a quality standpoint, and came off in my hand the first and only time used. The plastic base for this tray has about fifty little half inch square honey-comb sort of areas that grease from meat or juices from food WILL get down into. This thing is a nightmare to adequately clean and not worth the trouble. It went back to the store immediately, and it was not all the way clean because after about thirty minutes I gave up. I'm looking for another brand now.

Pinzon Stainless-Steel Mandoline [Amazon Frustration-Free Packaging] Review

Pinzon Stainless-Steel MandolineI bought this as a gold box item, thankfully, because otherwise I would have returned it.All I use it for is to slice onions thinly.I've used the straight blade less than 10 times and it is already dull.I read the reviews for the previous Pinzon mandoline which were universally terrible but I also read that Amazon had taken that model off the market and replaced it with this one which was supposed to be much better but my complaint is the same as the other model. Also the slices get stuck in the machine.I had better luck with my plastic V-slicer.I gave the mandoline 2 stars because it does have a lot of attachments and is easy to use but it is difficult to clean and doesn't serve its main purpose, to slice!

Update 2/29/08: I now absolutely hate this product. The straight blade has completely dulled. The food slices get caught under the mandoline by the blades that are turned to dice the food rather than slip out to the bowl or plate underneath.Make sure you use the food holder to slice because the blade is so dull, the food slips and you will get cut. This mandoline is going in the trash.I won't even donate it because I'm afraid someone will get hurt.

Börner V-Wave Waffle Slicer Review

Börner V-Wave Waffle SlicerThe slicer does a good job on making waffle cut potatoes, which is what I wanted, but the safety holder (shown in the photo of the item) is not included, and there is no warning that this must be bought separately. The first instruction is "Alway use safety holder," which is a good instruction, and therefore the buyer should be warned ahead of time that it is not included - or else the holder should not appear in the picture of the product.

The potato goes into the slicer fairly easily to start, but it is rather difficult to get it to go all the way through for a complete slice.Perhaps if I had the safety holder, slicing would be easier. If you have another mandoline that uses the same safety holder, then you probably would not need to buy one, but unfortunately this was not the case for me.

Chef's Choice 632 International Gourmet VariTilt Electric Food Slicer Review

Chef's Choice 632 International Gourmet VariTilt Electric Food SlicerPositive:Great! Great! Great!I spent weeks going over reviews and comments about electric food slicers in preparation for replacing one that I had been using for about 25 years. It was heavy, clunky and would slide around the counter when used.I only took it out to use when nothing else would work. But it did slice. After reading all that I could in the reviews, I decided that the Model 632 seemed the best fit for my use.Cooking is a hobby and not a profession so I needed nothing more than a good quality, home slicer.I decided to keep the new slicer on the counter for a while so I could try it out.I think it has found a permanent home.I find that I am using it almost every day for bread, meat, cheese and vegetables. The operation is smooth and with the caliper dial, very repeatable. It is stable and does not "walk" on the counter when slicing. It appears to be well manufactured and durable.Several reviewers pointed to the on/off and lock switches locations as being a problem.I find just the opposite to be true.Their location is both logical and easy to use.Though I don't use it often, I found that the little extra that I paid for the tilt table was worth the cost.Overall, it has met and/or exceeded every expectation that I had prior to purchase.

Negative:If there is a downside, it would be that the component parts are not dishwasher safe. This is nothing more that a very minor annoyance, since the unit comes apart very easily and requires little or no effort to clean.(Just use caution when cleaning the blade.)

Overall: I may find problems in the future, but for the present it gets 5 stars plus.In my opinion, a good buy.

Progressive International Multi Slicer Review

Progressive International Multi SlicerThis is a good item for the price but I would say it is more of a disposable item...I have owned several of them.It doesnt stay sharp all that long.Even when its new it works best on hard-ish vegetables like carrots or zucchini or potatos and less well on *juicy* veggies like onions or cucumbers. The more watery veggies tend to slice more unevenly and break apart. It also slices best with just straight slicing even tho there are other slicing heads. It comes with a *safty* grip to put in the veggies so you dont cut your hand but i have found it isnt sharp enough to hold most vegetable, nor are the spikes long enough to grip the vegetable even if they will go into them. This is an *okay* unit...for as inexpensive as it is.Mandolines can be very expensive but I am at the point where I have bought several I am thinking that it might be more cost effective to buy a more *professional* model...If you dont do much slicing and would only use something like this rarely, this might be a cost effective way to go.But if you would want to use this on a more regular basis, I would go with something more high-end.

- 'V' blade gets high marks:Models tested had straight blades (bad), or diagonal blades (better), or 'V' blades (best). All could slice hard things like potatoes & carrots, but only those with a 'V' blade could slice a tomato without destroying it.
- Pusher handle keeps your fingers away from the blade
- Slice thickness easy to adjust.
- Comes with 3 blades that conveniently store in the bottom of the unit.
- Good value for the price.(There was one product they rated higher, but it sells for over $300!)

Swissmar Borner V-Slicer Pro Mandoline V-4000, 7-Piece Set Review

Swissmar Borner V-Slicer Pro Mandoline V-4000, 7-Piece SetI received this as a Christmas gift --one of the best I've ever enjoyed! It is easier, faster and less hassle than my food processor. The first day I got it I used it to slice potatoes for scalloped potatoes and oh my gosh how easy.I find I grab it and go to much more than my electric gadgets (and I admit, I love gadgets...)It's a necessity for what I need lots of--onions (is there a good recipe that does not include onions???) peppers, tomatoes, apples, fennel, etc....it's a wonder on hard fruits and veggies. The clean up is quick, the hand-guard/pusher is easy and actually works, (I've even used this thing with celery!) and the attachments fit and store very well in the rack that's included.(And very safely)

My only complaint is that the plastic seems to stain with carrot or tomato. In the big scheme of things....no biggie.

I love this thing!

Norpro Mushroom Egg Fruit Slicer Review

Norpro Mushroom Egg Fruit SlicerIt's about time!I have been wanting this for a long time. This slicer is nice and sturdy. It has blades, not wires!

I have been wanting something to slice mushrooms with.It always seemed logical to me that an egg slicer should be able to slice mushrooms, as well.I would buy egg slicers at the store only to have them break on me with the very first use.I never had even one make a mark on a mushroom.A mushroom! We aren't talking about rocks here.I can't imagine any of those pieces of junk cutting eggs either.

I ordered this one and I am happy! It is good and solid- metal with blades! It is much bigger than the grocery store garbage, too.

Did I mention that it has blades?!

I look forward to many years of service from this gadget.

Benriner Japanese Mandoline Slicer Review

Benriner Japanese Mandoline SlicerThis is an excellent slicer.I've used everything in it from carrots (when making my carrot version of thai papaya salad) julienned into matchstick thickness to wide thin slices of Korean radish.Never failed me.

Two drawbacks though:

1.The safety guard is a joke.It doesn't hold the veggies very well and is a pain to use effectively...which means I usually don't use it.I've cut my fingers on this mandolin twice now, which isn't bad for two years of regular useage, but I don't like the sight of blood so I'll leave it as a major detractor.Luckily for me, I cut myself on the julienne part and not the actual wide slicer. In other words, my finger meat was left shredded but intact.Whew!

2.The metal parts rust.Yep.They rust.Hence the reason I am now shopping around for another slicer.Don't know yet if I'll get another Benriner.Might look into the Bohn.

***Update***
Apparently Benriner realized the metal parts rusted because their mandolins now come with plastic screws to hold the julienne blades in place and to adjust the thickness level.

Deni 14150 Electric Food Slicer Pro II Review

Deni 14150 Electric Food Slicer Pro IIThis product is TERRIBLE.I caution EVERYONE to stay as far away from this as they can.I bought it, used it to slice cheese and the motor literally stopped, even on the highest speed. It has a variable control speed dial and if you put it on the lowest setting it can go, it sounds like something is caught up in the blade and the engine is going to catch on fire--and that's without trying to cut anything.

I'm not kidding, this is a terrible product.I hope someone else doesn't make the mistake I did.Fortunately I was lucky in that the seller decided to give me my money back (I still had to pay for shipping to and from the seller which came to $30).At the time, I couldn't find any reviews for this product and I thought they couldn't possibly screw something like that up...at least for what I wanted to use it for.

If you /do/ buy this thing, you'll be sorry...mark my words.

Presto 02970 Professional SaladShooter Electric Slicer/Shredder, White Review

Presto 02970 Professional SaladShooter Electric Slicer/Shredder, WhiteFOLLOW UP: 1-15-2010

After 2 years of use (about 4 times a month), the plastic gear shaft that plugs into the main mechanism was never properly snug. So, it stripped out and as well, the area where the shaft is inserted into is also stripped, i.e., both the base mechanism and grater holder are stripped.

Maybe the plastic used is too soft?

So, anyway, can't use it at all and there is no way to repair it. Definitely not as solidly made as the ones 2 plus decades ago. Big waste of money. Bought many new graters and no way to use them unless I buy a completely new machine. Do not want to waste my money on a new one. Will buy a food processor instead.

ORIGINAL REVIEW:
Needs a Second Size Grater

Good old Salad Shooter. Got a cordless one back in the mid-80s and loved it, but they stopped making the battery piece for it and mine died. Should have bought the one with the cord, so I could still use it.

With the Professional version, the blades and feeding shoot are bigger and wider than the basic Salad Shooter, but sadly, there is only one grating blade and it grates in thick results. So, you have to go to [...] to order variable grater sizes.

No fine grating here. That's good for carrots (FYI, celery does NOT grate well in this -- it clogs horribly, use a different blade), but if you want your parmesan delicate, you will need to then put it in a food processor to pulverize it to powder. No in-between solution for thin, grated cheese.

Kind of defeats my main purpose of the shooter. Would have preferred to see 2 types of grating blades in the package.

Easy clean up (except be warned, when you grate cheese a good dollop is left behind the twist-on ring and in the bottom of the shoot). A little clumsy getting the unit to snap together. The old basic Shooter was easier to lock and load.

Otherwise, seems to be a strong tool (it's a bit loud) -- had it about 3 months; so far so good.

Rival 1042W Electric Food Slicer, White Review

Rival 1042W Electric Food Slicer, WhiteI have thoroughly enjoyed having this slicer.I make bread and other methods of slicing have not been completely satisfactory.I want thinner slices to reduce calories and make the loaves last longer. This slicer does the trick. You can't just run the slicer easily back and forth with bread, you have to manually return the bread to the starting position, but that's no big deal.Sometimes the bottom crust catches between the blade and the housing and you have to pull it out gently without breaking the bread - but that isn't a big problem either. This is just so much better than other things I have tried, and without spending hundreds of dollars (or more) on a professional slicer.Well worth the money, wouldn't want to be without it.

Kyocera Adjustable Mandoline Slicer, Red Review

Kyocera Adjustable Mandoline Slicer, RedAlthough I also bought a "professional mandoline", I thought this would make a handy little item.Boy - was I right!I use this mandoline more than the professional. Why?It is convenient! It's very sharp (the porcelein blade is much sharper than metal), the hand guard is comfortable and easy to use, the whole device is dishwasher safe, and it takes little counter space and little storage space.I use it to slice veggies for everything from sandwiches to tostadas to soups to breakfast burritos. Here's what it does not do:Although the blade is "adjustable", only the biggest setting works correctly. The smaller settings makes mush of your veggies. Also, it is not quite wide enough. At the thickest part of a big round onion, it would have to be turned sideways. Finally, it only has 1 blade and so it only does the one style of cut.I highly recommend it.It is so easy to use that you will use it frequently. In fact, when you think: "Should I drag out the big mandoline?" You will say "No, I'll just use my little one (the Kyocera)".
